The ``chaya'' in ``Chayatsuji'' is a pattern dyeing technique called ``chaya-zome,'' which was developed in the early Edo period (Kanbun), and ``tsuji'' means ``katabira.'' This is a formal summer outfit favored by middle class samurai women. It was also incorporated into the clothing system of Ooku, and was worn by middle and lower ranks. By the way, the ones worn by Midaidokoro and Mirenchu are “Hontsuji”.
After the Meiji Restoration, it was accepted by the common people as a high-class kimono, and the pattern itself dyed at Chayatsuji came to be called "Chayatsuji".
