菊と桜が日本の国家花になります。

菊は外来種ですが、平安時代末期の後鳥羽院が自らこしらえた刀に菊一文字の紋を入れたことから、いつしか皇室の紋章に用いられるようになりました。そのため国花の1つになっているのです。

Chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms are the national flowers of Japan.

Although the chrysanthemum is a non-native species, it came to be used in the imperial family's crest at the end of the Heian period, when Emperor Go-Toba put the chrysanthemum character crest on a sword he made himself.  Therefore, it is one of the national flowers.
