黒留袖は、黒地のきものの、両胸、背、両袖の５箇所に、代々伝わる家紋を染め抜き、裾模様を付けた祝儀のためのきものです。

振袖の長い袖を切って詰める、つまり「袖を留めた」きものは、既婚女性を表しています。

大正4年の皇室令で儀式の服装が規定され、一般人も準じるようになりました。

黒地が選ばれたのは、黒は色が変わらないから、婚家に入ってから色を変えない誓いとされ、婚家に留まる意味でも留袖と呼ぶとも言われています。
