総絞りとは？What is total aperture?
総絞りとは、着物の布地 全てを絞り染めという技法で染めているもののことです。
Total tibori means that all the fabrics of kimono are dyed with a technique called tie-dyeing.
総絞りは、日本において6～7世紀頃からすでに行われておりました。
The total aperture was already done in Japan from around the 6th to 7th centuries.
その技法は、糸や板などの専用器具を用いて布を縛り、染料がしみこまない部分を作ります。布全体を染めたのち、糸をほどくことで縛った部分だけは色が入らず、立体的に浮かび上がりそれが模様になるという仕組みです。
The technique uses special instruments such as threads and boards to tie the cloth and make a part where the dye does not soak. After dyeing the whole cloth, only the part tied by untying the thread does not get color, and it emerges three-dimensionally and becomes a pattern.
絞り染めは手作業で行われるため、１日に約 数百個〜数千個ほどしかできません。一つの着物に対して、約20万粒以上縛る必要があるため、完成までには数ヶ月〜1年以上かかると言われています。
Because tie-dyeing is done by hand, you can only do about hundreds to thousands of pieces a day. It is said that it will take a few months to more than a year to complete because it is necessary to bind more than 200,000 grains to one kimono.
