日本では仲のよい夫婦のことを、おしどり夫婦といいます。それと同じように、鴛鴦は仲睦（むつ）まじいことから、中国では夫婦の変わらぬ愛を象徴する鳥とされてきました。雄（おす）を鴛、雌（めす）を鴦といいます。

日本でも吉祥文様として用いられ、とくに桃山時代から江戸時代の能装束や小袖に多く見られます。

In Japan, couples who are on good terms are called oshidori couples.  In the same way, the mandarin duck has been considered a bird that symbolizes the unchanging love of a husband and wife in China because of their close relationship.  A male is called a squirrel, and a female is called a squirrel.

It is also used as an auspicious pattern in Japan, and is often seen in Noh costumes and kosode from the Momoyama to Edo periods.
